Welcome to The Thatched Cottage, located in the heart of Old Tipperary, five minutes from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary in Ballycommon. The homely ambience, fine dining and beverages, coupled with friendly staff catering for your every need, ensure it is the ideal venue for all your social and corporate events.
The structure itself has been preserved and restored to its original state, bringing with it that old worldly atmosphere. Today, the tradition is being nurtured and enhanced by the proprietors Kathleen & Tony Donlan.
The Thatched Cottage comprises four main areas:
- The Bar
- The Stables Restaurant
- An intimate Nell’s Cottage
- The Banqueting room for hosting larger functions such as weddings, communions, christenings, Christmas parties, fashion shows etc
Kids Area: There is a lovely play area for children, ensuring the entire family can settle effortlessly into the Thatched Cottage.

About the Local Area
The Thatched Cottage is situated within beautiful surroundings with a plethora of activities to choose from.
The Lakelands area of Lough Derg, in the village of Dromineer is only 3.5 kilometers away. Lough Derg is the second largest lake in Ireland and on the lower end of the longest river in Ireland, the river Shannon. Effectively you can travel from the North of Ireland right down to Dromineer and on to Limerick in a boat if you so wish.
As The Thatched Cottage is centrally situated in Tipperary, we are only 2 hours from Dublin, 2 hours from Cork, 30 minutes from Limerick City, an hour and a half from Galway and Waterford cities. We are just off junction 26 on the motorway and with easier access and parking then the nearby town of nenagh, ware an ideal location for bus tours, with ample parking and no traffic jams. We cater for large and small groups.

Shannon Sailing in Dromineer provides berthage for cruisers.
Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer, just five minutes from The Thatched Cottage, where you can learn to sail for juniors and adults
You can swim in Dromineer, and all around the lake. In addition to Nenagh Swimming pool.
Lough Derg is well renowned for fishing the world over. Trout and Pike fishing are both very popular. Every year the season starts with the may fly and carries on right through to October typically.
Banana Boat / Water Skiing / Water slides
Acqua Splash opened in 2016 and provides the hire of peddle boats, banana boat, water skiing, in addition to having the equivalent of a large bouncy castle with terrific slides on the lake. If you have children or are a water aficionado this service is a must for you.

There are long scenic drives you can take around the lake itself that encompass, castles, such as Portumna castle, which is a mere 40 min drive from The Thatch.
Birr Castle is a fantastic tourist destination with something for everyone to enjoy, there are nature walks, beautiful gardens to enjoy, a fabulous café on site, an amazing childrens playground, horse drawn carriages and much more
The Wild Atlantic Way
This 2,500km coastline drive begins a mere 45 minute drive from The Thatched Cottage, stop off enroute from or to the airport or Dublin city, we have beautifully sourced local food and have easy access and parking
Clay pigeon shooting is available a mere 3 km from The Thatched.
Nenagh Castle – ten minute drive from The Thatched Cottage. Nenagh castle is the towns oldest building, having been constructed in the 13th century.
Portumna Castle – 40 minute drive from The Thatched Cottage
This castle is four centuries old and was built by the De Burgh family.

The Rock of Cashel
This is approx. 50 min drive from The Thatched Cottage and is one of Irelands oldest monuments, it was once the seat of the High King Brian Boru, it has monastic origins, in addition to stories intertwined with The Vikings. This is a must see for anyone visiting
Holy Cross Abbey
The abbey is a mere 40 minute drive away, it is an old Cistercian monastery dating from the 13th century

Not forgetting Limerick City, which is a mere 30 min drive on the motorway from The Thatched cottage, ballycommon. In limerick there a myriad of theatres to attend, excellent hotels, the hunt musueum, Limerick is also the home of well known rughy team, Munster Rugby,
The University of Limerick www.ul.ie has a beautiful campus, with fantastic bridges and walks to avail of for the public, in addition to unbelievable sporting facilities with outdoor & indoor running tracks, a 50 metere pool, rowing, kayaking and much much more. There is also the University Concert Hall, which has something cultural to enjoy every week.
There are some well thought out and mature golf courses very close to the Thatched Cottage, the closest is Nenagh, which is less than ten minutes away.

Holy Island Tour
Holy Island is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland. It has a well preserved round tower and six churches which are unfortunately in ruins. Unusually the island has a bargaining stone, where marriage vows are still renewed.
Tountinna is only a ten min drive from The Thatched Cottage and is the highest point on the Arra mountains and forms part of the lough derg way. There are splendid views of Tipperary, Clare and Limerick to be seen from the top.
